DPI vs PPI — the 10-second version
Websites see your screen in CSS pixels at a nominal 96 DPI, multiplied by your pixel ratio — that's the detected number above. Physical PPI is how many real pixels fit in an inch of your specific panel, which depends on its size; type your diagonal into the calculator to get it.
FAQ
- Is this the same as my mouse DPI?
- No. Mouse DPI measures how far the cursor moves per inch of mouse travel and is set in your mouse software. This page measures your display's pixel density.
- Why does it show 96 DPI when my screen is sharper than that?
- 96 is the web's nominal baseline. High-density screens report a pixel ratio (like 2×) on top of it — the detected DPI above is 96 × your pixel ratio.
- What's a good PPI?
- Around 90–110 PPI is typical for desktop monitors; 200+ is 'retina' territory where individual pixels are hard to see. Higher helps mostly for text sharpness.
