Low score or no WebGL? It's usually one setting
WebGL runs on your GPU. When hardware acceleration is off, browsers fall back to slow software rendering — 3D sites stutter and some refuse to load. If the renderer above says "SwiftShader" or "software", turn hardware acceleration on and restart the browser.
FAQ
- What's the difference between WebGL 1 and WebGL 2?
- WebGL 2 adds modern GPU features (more texture formats, transform feedback, instancing improvements). Every current desktop browser supports both; missing WebGL 2 usually means outdated drivers.
- Why is my WebGL benchmark slow on a good GPU?
- Check that hardware acceleration is enabled, close other GPU-heavy tabs, and unplug from battery-saver mode. Laptops may also be running the browser on the weaker integrated GPU.
- Is WebGL a security risk?
- It's enabled by default in all major browsers and sandboxed. Some privacy tools disable it because the GPU string aids fingerprinting — that's a privacy trade-off, not a vulnerability.
