What is a dead pixel on a monitor?

One picture element usually contains red, green, and blue subpixels. A dark full-pixel defect stays black on white and every bright color. A failed subpixel can look black or oddly colored only on certain backgrounds, which is why an RGB pass catches defects that white alone can miss.

Checking dead pixels without false alarms

Dust is convincing on a white screen. Shift your viewing angle a little. A loose fiber seems to move over the image, while a panel defect holds the same position in the pixel grid. Clean once more before calling it a failure.
